Frequently Asked Questions

Thank you for your interest in the Hasken Construction Extreme Makeover: Home Edition project! We've collected many of the most-asked questions and their answers for you here, and will add others as we hear them throughout the project.

Please consider volunteering and/or donating to this effort to help a very deserving family – we really appreciate your support!

How long will this project take?

Each episode is self-contained and features a race against time on a project that would ordinarily take at least four months, involving a team of designers, contractors and several hundred workers who have just seven days (106 hours for the actual construction) to rebuild an entire house – every room, the exterior and landscaping.

Will Ty Pennington be there?

Each episode begins with team leader/carpenter Ty Pennington's "Good morning!" wake-up call, when he and the design team surprise the unsuspecting family with the news that their home has been chosen to receive a makeover.

How popular is the show?

The show earned an Emmy for Outstanding Reality Program in 2006 and the People's Choice Award for Favorite Reality Show/Makeover; is produced by Endemol USA, a division of Endemol Holding; David Goldberg is president of Endemol USA; the series is executive-produced by Anthony Dominici.

When will this show air?

The show airs on Sundays 8/7c on the ABC Television Network; the Hasken Construction Extreme Makeover: Home Edition episode will air sometime in December 2009 or January 2010. We'll post the exact date when we know it.

Where can I find out more about Extreme Makeover: Home Edition?

Visit the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition website for more information.

When would be a good time to come?

The schedule for this project will be posted on this site and updated as needed. Please check it as often as you like, or sign up for social media alerts on the home page.

Can I come and see the house being built?

Yes you can! Please check back here for information about transportation and parking after the family is announced on September 9. Look at the schedule to see what is planned each day for the project and decide what would work best for you. The spectator area will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday September 10 – Tuesday September 15, and on Wednesday September 16 from 8:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. Please remember that you will likely be standing most of the time and the ground will be uneven so wear closed-toe, comfortable shoes. You may bring lawn chairs if necessary.

Will there be free parking?

There will be no spectator parking at the build site. Please check the current transportation information after the family is announced on September 9.

Can I volunteer? How?

If you are interested in volunteering, please visit the Volunteer page for info. Please do not expect to arrive at the site and be accepted as a volunteer on the spot. This may be possible on occasion but will be the exception rather than the rule. We are also in need of financial donations to purchase goods and services that are not donated – please consider this way to help too!

Are children allowed?

Yes, but only in the spectator area. Children under age 18 are not allowed on the construction site at any time. Also please remember again that there will be long periods of standing and sometimes there will not be a lot to see. If your child is unruly or running around without supervision, you may be asked to leave.

Can I get autographs?

Ty Pennington, the rest of the design Team, and all the volunteers will be working really hard to make sure the family comes back to a completed home. There may be opportunities for autographs, but we unfortunately cannot guarantee that. If there is an opportunity, you will be very welcome to ask for autographs.

Who are the designers on this build?

We’re delighted to have very talented designers Paul DiMeo, Ed Sanders and Paige Hemmis on this build. Read more about them at ABC.com.

Can I bring a sign?

You can certainly bring a sign to encourage all the volunteers and construction workers! They deserve all the credit for lending us their time and expertise to help build this house in one week. Signs for this purpose would be very much appreciated. Keep them positive, short, and visible from a distance. Political or issue-related signage will not be permitted.

Is smoking allowed?

No. This is a live construction site and we need to take every precaution to make it a safe environment for everyone involved.

Will cameras and video cameras be allowed?

You are more than welcome to bring them and use them while you are in the spectator area. We also will be posting new photos to this website during the build so be sure to check back regularly for updates!

Can I bring food?

Of course. Please also remember to drink lots of water. There will be limited concessions available onsite, but there are plenty of eating establishments easily accessible on the route of the transportation that will be provided. Please also remember that we are guests in this neighborhood, so be sure to throw any garbage away in the proper receptacles.

Will spectators be allowed if the weather is bad?

The construction will go on even if it storms! Umbrellas are allowed, but unfortunately, there will not be a covered area for spectators.

Will there be bathrooms?

Yes, there will be portable facilities available to you.

Will there be paramedics for emergencies?

Yes. In case of an emergency, please find the nearest volunteer and ask for assistance.

What time will the family be home to reveal the new house? What time should I be there to see it?

The "Reveal" will take place on Wednesday September 16. Please check back on this site for more information as details are finalized.
